Helping a friend put together a Sweet Sixteen party for her daughter sounded like a lot of fun. Then the reality hit that we had to find a way to keep a large group of teenagers entertained for hours. We could have handled the basic ceremonies, but parents and their friends aren’t cool. None of us wanted to face down a group of bored and impatient teens.

My husband really wanted a guitar for his birthday this past year, and I wasn’t sure where I was going to find a nice guitar within our allotted birthday budget. I was determined, however, so I began looking for acoustic electric guitars for sale.
I began looking six months before my husband’s birthday, so I knew that there was a good chance of finding acoustic electric guitars for sale at some point during that time. As I looked and waited, a sale finally came after three months. There were three guitars that I had been looking at, and only one of them was on sale. I really only had the option to buy the one on sale if I was going to stay in budget, but it was my first pick, so that was okay.
I gave the guitar to my husband for his birthday, and he was truly surprised. I don’t think that he really expected to get a new guitar, especially one that was that nice. I was also able to get an amplifier with the guitar for very little money, so husband had everything needed to play his brand new guitar. There is hardly a day that goes by when I don’t get to hear him play either.

My boss is a real cigar aficionado. So when I needed to pick up a gift for him, I thought about cigars. I soon learned two important facts about cigars. First, I don’t know enough about them to pick out one that someone would like as a gift. Two, they are expensive.
What I did find at the humidor shop was a variety of cigar cutters. The shopkeeper explained that the guillotine cigar cutters are the best ones to get, as they provide the right kind of cut to enhance the cigar experience. Best of all, the guillotine cigar cutters were well within my price range. I was able to find one that was unique looking, which helped make it not so obvious that I wasn’t spending a lot of money.
I made sure not to mention what I had gotten the boss to anyone at work, hoping that I would have a gift that really stood out. So imagine my surprise when it turned out that four of the six of us had gotten the boss guillotine cigar cutters. Luckily, we had all selected different ones, so it gave him a variety to choose from. The one guy in the office who also likes cigars had ventured to buy cigars himself, and one other woman had gotten him a subscription to a cigar magazine.
Fortunately, the boss was very gracious. He said something like he was always losing his cigar cutter, so having extras would be great; that made me feel a little better. Next year, we have decided we will go in together and get help so we can buy him cigars.

My mother-in-law is a very conservative older woman. I remember that in the early years of my marriage, she would use the term PG when she wanted to say the word pregnant. The idea of having any type of nude art, or even attending a gallery where it was featured was completely out of her comfort zone. My daughter majored in art history in college, and it was her goal to get her grandmother to appreciate the art of the old masters.
I do not think my mother-in-law thought the nude art of classical masters was pornographic; she was simply uncomfortable with outward signs of sexuality. My daughter suggested that we give her grandmother the gift of an art gallery membership one year for her birthday. The gift was well-received, but we had to go with my mother-in-law whenever there was an exhibit featuring nudity. She had a hard time enjoying the modern exhibits because the display of sexuality was often so overt.
However, with time and exposure to the masters, she did learn to appreciate classical nude art pieces for the treasures they were. I do not know if she will every be totally comfortable with displays of the human body, but as she has learned some of the history of the classical art periods from my daughter, she has at least become more tolerant and has learned to appreciate the art for the history it represents.
