It\u2019s been an interesting month in the world of Google. At the beginning of June Google rolled out a Core Update<\/a>. And along with that announcement, shared that another update will be rolling out in July.<\/p>\n

Google\u2019s Page Experience Update<\/a> that has had SEOs and web developers working diligently to improve the Core Web Vitals scores started rolling on June 15. Google said it\u2019s rolling out slowly and will continue through August.<\/p>\n

And last week, Google confirms they have rolled out a Spam Algorithm Update<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"What<\/a><\/div>\n

What Does This Mean for Local Businesses and SEO?<\/h2>\n

With a Core Update, it\u2019s always a wait-and-watch type situation. This update could help the business\u2019 website to appear more often in search \u2013 or it can hurt it. This is one reason it\u2019s so important to pay attention to your client\u2019s websites, their rankings and traffic.<\/p>\n

With the Page Experience Update, everyone is predicting that the impact will be minor. If the business\u2019 website was performing well in search results before, most likely it will not be impacted.<\/p>\n

Consider two competing pages on two different websites that are equal in content and quality. Which site gets the higher visibility? Most likely, the page with the better page experience will be the determining factor here.<\/p>\n

The Spam Algorithm Update is to keep sites that have malware on them, or that employ strategies to try and place in search results by appearing highly relevant out of search results \u2013 when in fact they are placing now.<\/p>\n

Also, just recently, Google seems to have grouped all their content policies related to search<\/a> together.<\/p>\n

Google Got Rid of Google Business Profile (GBP) Short Names<\/h2>\n

In brief, Google got rid of short names in the Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) listings. For those businesses that had already created short names, they are still there and functioning. For others, the feature is no longer available.<\/p>\n

While some local marketers and agencies leveraged the use of short names to provide their clients an easier way to get more reviews from their customers, quite a few didn\u2019t care either way.<\/p>\n

From the GBP dashboard, the business can still click \u201cShare your business profile\u201d and get a shortened link which will make it easier to share.<\/p>\n

Featured Reviews Based on Place Topics in Google Business Profile Listings<\/h2>\n

Another change rolling out to GBP listings relates to Place Topics<\/a>. It seems there could be a change coming to GBP. It\u2019s been spotted that featured reviews are based on the most-mentioned Place Topics. We couldn\u2019t recreate this with the few listings we checked. It could be a limited test, or still rolling out. Time will tell.<\/p>\n

What Are Place Topics Within Google Business Profile?<\/h2>\n

Place Topics are automatically created within a business\u2019 GBP listing based on the keywords within the reviews. Here\u2019s an example from a listing we found that had the feature.<\/p>\n

These topics work as a filter, allowing a user to read reviews that fall under a specific topic when clicked. Place Topics seems to be available only on mobile \u2013 and only available for listings with a larger amount of reviews.<\/p>\n

As stated in Google Business Profile Help: \u201cPlace Topics uses data from your business\u2019s reviews to provide topics based on concise information and keywords from what your customers highlight. Topics are only created when your business has enough customer reviews.\u201d<\/p>\n

The help doc advises that it\u2019s extremely important for a business to flag abusive reviews since it can create abusive topics. Yet another reason that monitoring reviews is important.<\/p>\n
