For the last few months, Google has been rolling out what seems to be update after update. For example, the Spam Update that started rolling out at the beginning of August is still rolling out \u2013 Danny Sullivan confirmed on Twitter it <em>may<\/em> be finished next week.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/images\/gmb-spam-update.png\" alt=\"gmb spam update\" width=\"1000\" height=\"527\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Are You Concerned About the Google Spam Update?<\/h2>\n<p>We\u2019ve been getting calls from our Advice Local partners concerned about this update, and wondering if we think it\u2019s going to impact their clients negatively. There\u2019s no way for us to tell you how this will affect your clients\u2019 websites. Unfortunately, it\u2019s a wait-and-see for us all.<\/p>\n<h2>Google Is Rewriting the Title Tags Displayed in Search<\/h2>\n<p>Google has been busy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/google-is-rewriting-title-tags-in-serps\/416793\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rewriting title tags for our partners\u2019 clients\u2019 websites<\/a> this week. It\u2019s actually been quite the hot topic online. We did some testing with the Advice Local website and found we were not immune from this rewriting of page titles.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-17080\" src=\"https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/images\/rewrite-page-title-example.png\" alt=\"rewrite page title example\" width=\"1000\" height=\"207\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We thought this example was a funny one. Just why Google decided this was a better title tag, we\u2019ll never know. This is <em>not<\/em> an H1 on the page, so the theory that they are pulling from H1s doesn\u2019t apply here. Also, since we did a site search in Google to see all the page titles for our site, keywords are not a factor \u2013 at least not for the pages we noticed the title tags are being rewritten for.<\/p>\n<p>If you speculated (like Marie Haynes) that this is related to the Passages Ranking, Danny Sullivan has responded with a resounding <em>no<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seroundtable.com\/google-header-tags-vs-title-tag-snippet-change-is-not-related-to-passaging-ranking-31954.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barry Schwartz<\/a> reported on the topic.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is the Passages Ranking?<\/h2>\n<p>Since we haven\u2019t mentioned this update before, the <a href=\"https:\/\/searchengineland.com\/google-passage-ranking-now-live-in-us-english-search-results-346034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Passages Ranking<\/a> enables Google to index not just a web page, but individual passages from a page. For some websites this could mean the visibility in search they were getting before will go away. For other sites, it could mean they will get <em>more<\/em> visibility. The websites that will win are the ones that have the best answer for the search query \u2013 this has always been the priority for Google.<\/p>\n<p>Passages rolled out in October of last year, so any aftermath from this has most likely happened already. Google says passage-based indexing will affect 7% of search queries across all languages when fully rolled out globally.<\/p>\n<div class=\"cb-advice\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/seo-tools\/local-visibility-report\/?utm_source=Blog_Banner&#038;utm_medium=Blog_Content_Banner&#038;utm_campaign=Blog_Banner&#038;utm_content=can_local_business_be_found_find_out_now\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"700\" height=\"250\" src=\"https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Visibility-Report.png\" class=\"acb-banner-image\" alt=\"Check Your Online Visibility Report\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Visibility-Report.png 700w, https:\/\/www.advicelocal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Visibility-Report-300x107.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<h2>What\u2019s the Big Lesson With These Google Changes?<\/h2>\n<p>We can sum it up with one word \u2013 <em>diversify<\/em>. Make sure the local marketing strategies you implement for your clients bring a multi-pronged approach.
