How to Do It

When you upload a photo to your company’s listing, the Google local business listing photo size has to be at least 1000 x 1000 pixels. If your photo doesn’t fall within those parameters, Google may not be able to display it. The photo has to be in a JPG, GIF, PNG, TIFF or BMP format and the file size can’t be larger than 1MB. There is a chance that you’ll see pictures from other sources on your Google Places page. For example, there may be pictures from other Google users as well as photos from other areas of the Web. Google is all about trying to enhance the user experience, so they will take several factors into consideration when ranking your listings photos. These include:

  • Size
  • Content (Google tends to rank photos of real images higher than logos. The more relevant the picture is to the nature of your business, the better chances you have to rank higher.)
  • Quality

What NOT to Do

It’s very important that you adhere to Google’s standards if you want your listing to be as successful as it can be. For instance, if you run a restaurant you could run a photo of a menu or of your sign out front. However, in most instances, Google won’t look kindly upon pictures that have only text. You’ll also want to stay away from the following:

  • The picture can’t be copyrighted.
  • It can’t be a screenshot.
  • It has to be of good quality. If it’s blurry, too dark or rotated, it might not make the cut.

And, of course, it can’t be pornographic in nature, can’t promote hate or incite violence, or can’t involve any sort of invasion of privacy – not that any of those conditions would apply to your business anyway.
